Dr. Sue Mitchell is a graduate of University of Kansas School of Medicine and completed her residency in internal medicine and her fellowship in gastroenterology.

Dr. Mitchell has been in private practice for over 25 years and was the first female gastroenterologist in the Colorado Springs area. Early in her career, she frequently saw patients who were experiencing bowel issues, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), incontinence, constipation, bloating, and more. For years, Dr. Mitchell approached those symptoms through the lens of “traditional” gastroenterology and had the good fortune to work alongside colleagues who were on the cutting edge of diagnosis and treatment of a GI condition called small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).

Two years ago, she attended a GI conference sponsored by the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) in conjunction with the prestigious Cleveland Clinic, and it opened her eyes to the science behind functional medicine. Functional medicine focuses on a science-based approach by which patients and practitioners work together to address possible root causes of disease. This marked the beginning of two years of extensive study and research into the field of functional medicine.

The more she learned, the more she became interested in the microbiome—the trillions of microorganisms that exist throughout the human body—and the developing science behind it. The company that emerged is Gutwell Medical.

Currently, she works closely with patients to heal the microbiome through diet and pharmaceutical-grade supplements to find the right balance of probiotics, prebiotic fiber, and nutrition that will decrease the populations of bad bacteria and nourish everything that’s good. Dr. Mitchell collaborated with Dr. Margaret Harris, Associate Professor in Nutrition at UCCS, to develop healing protocols for gut health.

Some of Gutwell Medical’s products can be blended into medically designed shakes, because liquids empty differently from the stomach, and that way, Dr. Mitchell ensures all nutrients are delivered to the gut and  begin healing. Ultimately, Dr. Mitchell says reestablishing an optimal microbiome is the key to longevity, adding that most all diseases can be traced to a lack of good diversity in your microbiome.

The past two years have shown Dr. Mitchell that you can reverse and heal many conditions and change people’s lives forever by healing the gut. Dr. Mitchell believes in spending extensive time understanding the individual’s symptoms and needs.

Although Dr. Mitchell no longer does procedures, she maintains partnerships with practitioners who can perform procedures and provide additional GI care if needed.

Dr. Mitchell believes that she now practices two specialties: functional medicine and gastroenterology.  Recognizing that the combination is exceedingly rare, she believes outcomes can be improved by using both modalities.
