A nationally recognized cardiac surgeon, Dr. John R. Mehall, MD, FACS, FACC, has received the “Top Doc” honor from his peers every year since its inception. As the founder of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery Associates, Colorado’s largest independent cardiothoracic surgery practice, Dr. Mehall practices at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs and several other locations across Colorado. Dr. Mehall has a unique expertise in minimally invasive heart valve surgery and has taught other surgeons minimally invasive heart valve techniques for more than fifteen years. Minimally invasive approaches work by going between the ribs rather than splitting the breastbone, as is done in traditional cardiac surgery. Patients have significantly less pain, with a quicker recovery.

During his time in Colorado, Dr. Mehall has performed over 3000 heart operations, over half of which were heart valve procedures. Dr. Mehall performs the most mitral valve operations in the Rocky Mountain Region. In addition to heart valve surgery, Dr. Mehall has a special interest in surgery for atrial fibrillation and, along with his electrophysiology colleagues, performs hybrid ablation procedures to treat atrial fibrillation. Combining catheter and videoscopic surgical ablation results in the highest cure rates for atrial fibrillation and removes the area where stroke-causing blood clots form. To optimize patient outcomes, Dr. Mehall focuses his practice almost exclusively on minimally invasive heart valve and atrial fibrillation procedures. Patients have travelled from across the United States as well as Canada and Mexico to have surgery with Dr. Mehall.

Dr. Mehall and his family are actively involved and committed to the Colorado Springs community through a variety of charitable organizations and volunteer efforts.
